Obituary

To Our Mother Dearest,

On October 20 at exactly 11:54 pm in the stillness of night, you took your final breath — a moment as profound as the life you lived. A life full of selflessness, love, steadfast faith, and courage came full circle, surrounded by the family you so deeply cherished. On that quiet Monday night, as the world turned into Tuesday, you did what you had done your entire life — you brought us together. You were the bridge to our lives interweaving with each other and our own personal journeys.

For 82 years, you were a steady heartbeat in our lives — not a meteor flashing fast and bright, but a calm, soft and enduring light. You were the true meaning of your name — Honorata — a woman of honor. You stood by our father, our beloved Mamerto, leaving behind your homeland in the Philippines to give us a better life. Together, you built a home, a family, and a legacy here in the United States. You raised five beautiful children, lovingly accepted the spouses, and nurtured ten wonderful grandchildren. To be legendary, you showed us leading by example, is simply to be kind, to be present, and to love deeply.

What made you even more special was your humility. You never sought wealth or fame. You found joy in the simple things: family meals and gatherings, quiet moments, stories shared. Your laughter — that gentle “hehehehe” — was enough cheer for life.

And always, you said, “Emo paburen.” Always take care of. Those words became your song to us - a gentle reminder yet commandment of love. Emo paburen deng kapatad yu. Emo paburen deng pamilya yu. Emo paburen deng anak yu, deng apu ku. “Always take of your brothers and sisters. Always take of your families. Always take care of your children, my grandchildren.” You said it when we were young and still said it during your time of struggles — your voice quiet, but firm, reminding us to take care of one another, to never let distance or time make us strangers.

On your last day on Earth, light conquered darkness and through every sacrifice,  every decision, every act of love, we still hear you say, “Emo paburen.” Love reigned. Family reigned. Love over hate. Family over distance. Joy over sorrow.

As you join Dad, we can almost hear him say, “It’s a good dough,” and you, with your gentle laugh, reply once more — “hehehehe.”

Dakal a salamat, Mom. Your love, your laughter, your lessons — and your “Emo paburen” — live on in your children and grandchildren. With deep love and affection, we say thank you for all the sacrifices you made to give us the world. Kaluguran da ka. We love you always.
